Design and Build
The design and style is awesome. Very well built, ergonomic, comfortable to use, sturdy, and visually appealing.
No Backlit Keyboard
The backlit keyboard has never worked. I’m not sure if this is a flaw in my keyboard, a setting I’m unaware of, or if it’s simply broken. I’ve never seen the backlight feature. I haven’t been able to figure this out. This is disappointing since I’m often working and typing in the dark.
I just use a desk light.
Lag & Keyboard Recognition
The scissor-switch and thunderbolt connections are supposed to eliminate (or minimize) delay when typing. Unfortunately, there is still a periodic lag when typing. I’ve also noticed that frequently, keys are not recognized when typing. This is very disappointing since it takes more time to make-up for the lag and lack of key recognition when typing – making the scissor-switch feature (and claims) useless.
KeyHub
The biggest selling point for me was the keyhub. I use a MacBook and I hate the fact that expensive adapters are needed to connect my various devices.
The keyhub and connection ports are great…when they work.
Sometimes, I am able to connect to the keyhub with no problem, but oftentimes, I need to disconnect and reconnect several times before something is recognized. This has been the case for my webcam, USB’s, portable hard drive, and scan discs.
I’ve found myself using my Apple Magic keyboard and adapters more often simply because of the inconsistency in this feature – which was primarily why I purchased the keyboard.
Overall, the visual style and design of the KD-K1 keyboard makes it an attractive purchase. However, I think the price tag is a bit high for the keyboard that periodically functions correctly.
While I enjoy supporting businesses, especially with creative and innovative ideas, I would be hesitant to recommend the KD-K1 keyboard.
I would however, consider investing in a wireless option that provides the various keyhub connections, if all the bugs are worked out.
